Plainscape WordPress Theme — version 1.0

Glad to announce the release of a new WordPress theme. ‘Plainscape WordPress Theme‘ as we call it, is a plain and simple theme that just works!

  • Fixed width
  • Two columns
  • Right sidebar
  • Supports comments threading (WP 2.7), comments paging (WP 2.7), gravatars, post tags, sidebar widgets
  • Compatible with WordPress versions 2.5 to 2.7, and possibly with older versions
  • Valid XHTML and CSS
  • Simple / minimalist / plain / clean / blue / white

The theme is released for free to the public under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Download the theme from the Plainscape WordPress theme page.

PS: I have been out of touch with comments and feedback by users of my older themes and plugins. The next few days I will be spending time on my themes and plugins and be able to answer all your queries. Thanks for your patience!

  1. Great theme! Is it possible to insert a background image in the header? Could you please explain to me how? Thank you!

    1. Yes, it is possible to add background image for the header. Just open style.css file and add a background image under #header. You might also have to change the padding values to make it look good.

      1. I too am trying this… I love your theme and unfortunately am simply a very big noob about css. I’m assuming I’d change the file like so:

        #header {mypicture.pdf
        margin: 0 20px;
        padding: 30px 0;

        Where mypicture.pdf is the image for the header. Sorry to ask, but do I need to put that image in the images folder in the theme? Or somewhere else?

        1. craig, refer to my comment above. I’m not sure if you can have pdf file as a background image, but you can definitely use png, jpg or gif images.

  2. Some problems?
    I just asked you something? Why did you delete my question?
    I am not more stupid as anybody else new with the WordPress themes?

    THANK YOU, kind man

    1. I’m sorry suz, I know that you asked a question, I approved the comment but I accidentally deleted it while trying to delete another spam comment. It’s purely accidental and I apologize. I also apologize for not remembering your question, can you please come again with your question?

  3. Hi Srini. I really love your Plainscape theme and will use it. Thanks for creating it.

    However, like Andreas, I would like to have a graphic header. The area I mean is the area ABOVE the menu containing HOME ABOUT etc. The graphic would replace the header text and description that you already have there.

    You said to Andreas that all you have to do is add code to the style.css. I’ve been ‘playing’ with that and can’t figure it out – I’m not a web dev person.

    Would it be possible to tell me exactly what the statements would be and where they would go? I would like to add a graphic approx 920×125 (i.e., width of header) in jpg or gif format called, say, headergfx.jpg.

    As you may get more requests for this, maybe you could insert it into your next version as commented out code that people could enable, or add a new version with it in it??

    1. Hi Tom,

      Sorry for the late reply, but here’s what you have to do in order to have a background image for the header:

      Upload your heardergfx.jpg in the ‘plainscape’ theme directory. After that open the style.css file in the ‘plainscape’ folder and look for the block of code under #header around line 88. You will have to insert a line in the block as follows.

      #header {
      	background:url('headergfx.jpg') no-repeat top left;
      	margin: 0 20px;
      	padding: 30px 0;

      Play around with the margin and padding values until you are satisfied with the looks.

      In the next update of the theme, I will try and add an option to insert a header image…. the next update will be after a while.

      1. Thanks

        I was trying to put a small picture on my blog, but it just doesn’t work.

        So I put the highlighted part to “body tag” and it worked!!

        Thank you very much!!!

  4. Hi,

    I couldn’t get that to change anything in the bg of the header… Did I do something wrong?

    #header {
    background-image:url(‘bg.gif’) no-repeat top left;
    margin: 0 20px;
    padding: 30px 0;

    1. sorry, that was an edited one. I have done it both ways:

      #header {
      background:url(‘bg.gif’) no-repeat top left;
      margin: 0 20px;
      padding: 30px 0;

  5. Thanks for the clean looking theme! They are a rarity, and I appreciate all the hard work that you put into it – fantastic job!

    One thing I would like to do, mentioned by a few people earlier, is put a background image into the header.

    I would actually like to keep the title and sub-head text as is, but have a background image behind that text in the header. Is there a way to do that? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    1. van, please use the solution I provided in a previous comment. The next version of the theme will have an easy way to add a header image. Thanks!

  6. Thanks so much for this theme. I searched high and low for a theme that worked for my purposes.
    A couple of questions though….
    1) Is there a way to change the vertical menu values…I want “Home” to read “Research.”
    2) I installed a sidebar widget plugin for login, and now some of my posts push the sidebar to below the post text. This is, as you can imagine, frustrating. any ideas on how to fix this without removing the “sidebar login 2.1.4” plugin. (I think after installation of this was when I noticed this change in my post pages.)

    Thanks SO much in advance…I am planning on donating as soon as money comes in to spare…:-)

    1. Robyn, you can easily change ‘Home’ to ‘Research’. Just look into the header.php. As for the sidebar issue, well, I need to have a look at your website before offering a solution. Your website currently asks for a login. Contact me through email if you want help with this issue. And yeah, thanks for your donation whenever it comes. 🙂

  7. hi..
    is there a reason why the image wont show in the header

    #header {
    background:url(‘headergfx.jpg’) no-repeat top left;
    margin: 0 20px;
    padding: 30px 0;

    1. The reason would be that your headergfx.jpg is not in the ‘plainscape’ folder. The image should be in the same directory as style.css. Otherwise, you’ll have to mention the full corresponding path.

  8. Again, great theme, nice and simple.

    Like some other people on here I have had trouble with your method of using an image header. It is just not appearing and I’ve used the code you provided, obviously making the changes needed. I am completely at a loss as to how to get around this!

  9. Great theme, love the simplicity of it.
    I’m having the same problems mentionned above regarding using an image in the header.
    Have uploaded the Banner Image in the “Plainscae” folder and inserted your Header instructions. Alas with no success… would love to have recommandations on how to do it.
